As we age, we face daunting choices about housing. My clients wanted to remain in their hilltop home, but faced the challenge of not being able to negotiate stairs to their master bedroom suite. My concept was an elevator tower that was more like a Cape Cod Lighthouse than elevator. I tapered the shaft for drama, and added a large window in the rear wall of the elevator cab. On the first floor I installed a fixed French door, and on the second a double-hung window in the rear wall of the tower. The result gives a sense of light, openness, and connection to the outside. One can ride up and down with a view to the landscaped pool and the surrounding Vermont hills.
